IF YOU'VE BEEN TOYING WITH THE IDEA of moving to the UK but the information on Google doesn't speak directly to you, this book might just be what you've been looking for. Sam Beckbessinger has thoughtfully compiled this guide to help you find a job, figure out where to live and socialise. Below she shares an extract from her book. First things first...
FIND A JOB
Here's the good news: there are many more jobs to go around in the UK than in South Africa, in almost all careers. Anecdotally, a lot of people use LinkedIn to find jobs in the UK, so start off by updating your LinkedIn profile. Once you've marked yourself as looking for jobs in the UK, recruiters may start contacting you. Also, check relevant jobhunting sites, with a polished resume at the ready. And of course, let any professional contacts you have in the UK know that you're on the hunt. If you have decided that you need a skilled worker visa, there are job-hunting platforms that specifically allow you to search only for employers who are willing to sponsor international workers. Once the offers start coming in, check out the employer's rating on Glassdoor, a website that allows employees to rate their employers. This site will also give you an idea of the salary ranges for different jobs.
PRACTICAL TIPS FOR FINDING A JOB IN THE UK
Update your LinkedIn profile.
Make sure that your profile is showing up to recruiters and letting them know you're looking for work. Mention in your intro that you're specifically looking for UK jobs. Spend some time making sure your profile's as good as you can make it.
