THE USE OF GENUINE FUR has long been the fashion industry's most divisive conversation. Those ‘for’ will argue that the real deal is natural, biodegradable, sustainable and a $62 billion industry (according to the International Fur Federation in 2017) that supports families and communities. It’s also exceptionally cruel and inhumane, whether farmed or trapped. Faux fur, on the other hand, is typically made from synthetic fibres — essentially forms of plastic — and some say it glorifies the original act of killing an animal just for its pelt. The good news is that the race is now on to clean up the manmade alternative, as social media amps up consumer activism.
