A new guard of photographers and illustrators are approaching fashion with fresh eyes. Their intimate images capture the diversity and unique beauty of the female body and mind.
KATIE ROGERS @paperfashion
“I try to capture the image of what I feel as a woman through my artwork. Sometimes the figures are alone, or merely shadows, but it isn’t about loneliness or hiding—it’s about strength, independence, and simplicity. It’s about the curiosity and power we have when we are alone with our thoughts. I typically dress my figures in very feminine gowns that highlight a woman’s delicate beauty. [This image is of Lady Gaga at the MET Gala this year.] Like a ballerina, she can appear fragile, but, in fact, she is incredibly strong in mind and body.”
PRARTHNA SINGH @peeezers
“Navigating the world as a woman, I think there is a collective conscious we end up tapping into. It’s perhaps the same reason I feel such a connection with the subjects in my portraits. My fashion is all about feminism and I think you have to consciously work towards pushing that. When I started my career in my early 20s, I didn’t have such a strong point of view. But now it applies to all my work—whether it’s a fashion photograph, a reportage image, or a commercial job. At times it can get tough to negotiate but I think given the person that I am today, I need to make sure that the work I am making aligns with my beliefs.”
