The thrill of driving an electric car is novel; a hybrid like the BMW X5 xDrive40e, when operated in full electric mode, elicits a certain kind of wonder. As one coasts along the corners in tight shopping mall carparks, there is practically no noise except the sound of tyres rolling. There is certainly an art when it comes to building an SUV, a delicate balancing act between the heft of a larger wagon and sharp driveability. BMW’s interpretation of this is a high-end combination of user-friendly technology and premium leather.
BMW understands the fine line separating avant-garde and gimmicky. All-wheel drive, two power plants (with a combined 245hp), eightspeed Steptronic transmission, and the adaptive M suspension work seamlessly with the in-car console to allow fiddling even while driving. We are not saying that one should, but there is such a possibility with this car being designed to be simple to drive.
