Taming the mind is proving to be far more challenging in a world where being on has become more important than eating well. Being hyper-connected and having to be everywhere with everyone has become the norm these days, but this puts a toll on our overall health. We enlisted the help of former model and fashion photographer, now yoga and meditation teacher Sara Black to break down the concept of mindfulness and how it can be the antidote to the perma-tired state weve become.
You wake up from a sad five- or six-hour sleep, pick up your smartphone from the bedside table, check your e-mail, and answer a bunch of Viber and WhatsApp messages while doing some rando-stalking on Instagram and Facebook, and before you realize it you’re already late, so you zoom into the shower, get dressed in 10 minutes, and rush to the office in trusty Manila traffic. Just as you get to your desk, you feel in dire need of caffeine, so you reach for a tall cup of joe. You proceed to get some stuff(a.k.a. work) done (with Spotify playing in the background so you can set the “mood”), alternating between having social media breaks every five minutes and chit-chatting with your co-worker. The work day ends with barely anything ticked off your to-do list, but you’ve got dinner and drinks with friends, so you head to that, but end up half-chatting, half-munching, and half-checking your phone every two minutes. You head home, “try” to get some work done before hitting the sack while watching the latest episode of your favorite Netflix show. But wait—your day isn’t over just yet. While in bed, you do your final run through on Instagram Stories to check what everyone else was up to today, and yes, you too have to let everyone know that it was a “loooong work day, gotta hit the sack” with matching face filter. Before you know it, it’s already 1:30AM and you’ve got to be up again at six. You wake up the next day with the same pseudo busy day, and again the next.
