Sushmita Sen – Mom Who Values Motherhood More Than Her ‘Miss Universe Title‘
Food & Health|May 2019
More often than not, the quintessential image that arises when one thinks of a mother, is of the biological mother who carries her baby for nine months and suffers through labor to give birth to her child.
Sushmita Sen – Mom Who Values Motherhood More Than Her ‘Miss Universe Title‘

The contemporary definition however, takes a wide-angle lens at motherhood, and not classifying it as an all exclusive domain of a woman who carries the fetus.

As a human being, we are all endowed with motherly instincts to protect and nurture not only our off springs, but as a practice of nurturing, appreciating, caring and understanding people and their situations. Drawing parallels, this form of motherly love can be seen between two siblings, friends or even romantic partners. Going beyond normative boundaries, this form of unconditional motherly love and regard,is more a mental state than mere physical and biological motherhood which transcends to various forms.

Adhering to this modern definition of motherhood, Sushmita Sen is a one such single mother who set an example by going against the convention, to embrace Motherhood through adoption. Dropping the presumption of mere biological connections and an impulse to love and protect her 2 daughters, Sushmita Sen clearly describes ideal motherhood and as a more realistic one.

The year 2019 holds an extra special place for Sushmita Sen, as it marks 25 years since she was crowned Miss Universe. She was just a teenager (18 years of age) when she won the crowns of Femina Miss India and Miss Universe 1994. Today, she still strongly values the title of Motherhood in higher esteem, even more than the celebrated title of Miss Universe.

This former Miss Universe and noted Bollywood actor is an inspiration for many. Especially as we celebrate Mother’s Day 2019, we honor such people who not only reinvent motherhood but also live by it, every single moment and clearly prove that Motherhood requires Love, not DNA. Sushmita is a role model, not just for her daughters but for every girl in the world.
