It’s hidden everywhere – in obvious foods such as biscuits, chocolates and cakes, as well as less obvious foods including cereals, breads, ‘healthy’ snack bars and yoghurts. But there’s a reason why it’s called “the white death” – studies claim it can generate cancer-causing compounds, contribute to ageing and damage our immune system. Not to mention the fact that it’s bad for our waistlines. Nutritionist Alex Glover suggests some simple tips for cutting back your sugar intake over just seven days...
MONDAY
Opt for sweetener
Adding sugar to your coffee, tea or cereal can really rack up your intake over the week. “Try a natural sweetener such as stevia in place of table sugar, as this will save adding unnecessary calories to meals and drinks,” recommends Alex. For a hint of sweetness without the calories, you could also try sugar-free fruit or licorice tea.
TUESDAY
Snack food swap
It’s time to replace mid-morning biscuits or muffins with low-fat plain Greek yoghurt with nuts. It’s higher in protein to keep you fuller for longer, and it’s practically sugar-free. But don’t go OTT on the nuts – calories can add up!
