Gig: Medical physicist/medical sales
Wrist Reminder. At 5 feet 3 inches tall, Jessica Hiatt may not be the tallest WNBF pro Bikini and Figure competitor, but what she lacks in height, she more than makes up for in fighting spirit. “I have a tattoo on my wrist to remind me to be strong: And though she be but little, she is fierce,” she reveals.
Early Bird. The medical physicist turned software salesperson has been working out regularly since 2004 and prefers to train first thing in the morning five days per week. “That way, I can fully focus on my job during the day, then on my boyfriend, pup, friends, family and myself in the evenings,” she says.
Inspired by Oxygen. After graduating high school, track and volleyball athlete Lisa Trent realized she needed a new physical outlet — and discovered one thanks to Oxygen magazine. “Seeing how beautifully toned and defined the women were inspired me to [begin] weight training,” she recalls. “I immediately started to notice changes in my body and learned that consistency is key. This is a lifestyle, not a hobby.”
Winning Treatment. At 24, however, Trent began noticing troubling symptoms such as muscle weakness and flagging energy levels, which impacted her workouts and her results. “Eventually, I was diagnosed with a thyroid condition and celiac disease,” she says. Treatment plan in place, Trent is now tackling a new challenge: amateur bikini contests. At the 2018 NPAA British Columbia Classic, Trent took first in the masters division and second in the open class, and she went on to win the masters title a month later at the NPAA Canada Classic in Calgary.

THE POWER CLEAN (Discover this dirty little secret for better functional fitness.)
OLYMPIC LIFTS ARE A VALUABLE TOOL FOR IMPROVING STRENGTH and athletic performance — and as a side bonus, they also help develop crazy-good muscle shape, size, and definition. In fact, one could argue that the power-clean portion of the clean-and-jerk is the best exercise ever devised. “The clean is a functional movement used [routinely] in everyday activities,” says Aaron Viscounte, CSCS, head coach and manager at Summer’s Fitness Inc. in North Canton, Ohio. “We use aspects of the clean to pick up a box and put it on a shelf, move furniture or even go grocery shopping.” During a power clean, the barbell travels from the floor to the “racked” position at shoulder level and back down again. We tapped some elite trainers for their step-by-step expert advice on making the most of every rep.
