Those life-affirming, spirit cleansing spin classes that are now on the timetables of even the most mainstream of gyms? You can thank the original SoulCycle on 72nd Street. And all those dark, club-esque studios offering hybrid boxing/HIIT classes to a hip-hop soundtrack? They’ve taken their cue from the OG Rumble Boxing at 146 West 23rd Street. So, what are the streets of New York bringing to our fitness future next? Let us introduce you to 107 West 20th Street, where the locals have developed a cult-like devotion to the city’s – and very likely the world’s – first cold-workout studio, Brrrn.
What’s the deal? At a very cool 10°C, you can do Brrrn’s total-body strength and conditioning HIT class using battle ropes and weights. Or the cardio Slide class, which features weighted SandBells (disc-shaped bags filled with sand) and the Brrrn Slide Board (you wear booties over your sneakers to slide easily) for light resistance. The studio also offers a class combining strength and cardio. “[People] come in thinking they won’t sweat [but they] leave in less layers and [are] soaked,” says cofounder Johnny Adamic. Yep, consider us intrigued...
