Being a pro surfer isn’t all sunsets and palm trees. Tanika Hoffman shares the lessons she’s learnt in the tough world of competitive sport.
I SUPPORT WOMEN IN SPORT
In 2016, we launched a campaign to cast the spotlight firmly on our sportswomen – true superheroes with equal parts grit and grace. From hearing their stories to actually seeing their faces, we believed it was time to give female athletes the recognition they deserve for being such sporting badasses, despite everything from insufficient funding to a lack of media coverage… We salute them every damn day and hearing each one of their stories has made us as a team both incredibly humbled and hugely inspired. Know of someone who fits the bill? Email us at TellWH@ WomensHealthSA. co.za or tag us on social media using the hashtag #SAWomenInSport.
Scroll through Tanika Hoffman’s Instagram feed (@tanika_hoffman) and you’ll see an endless stream of palm trees, sunshine and ocean. So much clear, blue ocean. In case you were wondering, that really is her life. But as a competitive surfer, there’s an alternative feed of performance pressure you don’t get to see. “I haven’t had the best run of contests, last year especially,” she says. “But I’m still at it and I still love what I do, regardless of getting or not getting those results.” Here’s how she keeps it all going, come hell or high water.
Be appreciative.
