When it all gets too much, try some of these expert recommendations, writes Kerryn Massyn
THIS HAPPY TIME of your life can be plagued by a number of niggles and discomforts. There are big changes happening to your body, and they can leave you with some less-than-desired aches and pains. While this has been true for pregnant women since time immemorial, life in today’s world, with its medical and scientific advances, means you have some options to help you feel better.
You can’t use just any medicine you find on the pharmacy shelf, though. “Women are often encouraged to use as little medication as possible during pregnancy. Most medications have not been tested for safety in pregnant women, as it is against the law,” says Sr Marisce Blackaller-Smal, a nursing sister, midwife and lactation consultant at ABC Family Clinic in Cape Town. “Some over-the-counter medication may seem harmless, but can actually have a negative effect on mom and baby. Even certain vitamins and herbal remedies can be harmful. Bear in mind that not all pharmacy staff are trained in the pharmacological workings of all medications. Some gynaecologists don’t like their patients to use certain medications even if it is considered safe during pregnancy, or prefer another product which might be available on prescription only but a safer option than the OTC medication. So, it’s always a good idea that you check with your gynae or pharmacist before taking anything.”
With that in mind, we spoke to some pharmacist and pregnancy experts to find trusted solutions to common pregnancy complaints.
