Careful planning throughout the year ensures that Russell’s charge of the Winter Walk at RHS Harlow Carr in Yorkshire comes to life when most other gardens are at their quietest.

Earliest gardening memory from the age of about four I had my own little plot in my nan’s garden. This is where she taught me to grow typical old-fashioned plants, such as wallflowers and candytuft.

Favourite garden I was taken recently to Ray Wood, a secluded gem of a woodland garden within the grounds of Castle Howard, North Yorkshire. The plant choices and combinations are amazing.

Three worthwhile tips for every gardener Be sure to consider presentation, experimentation and at times ruthlessness.
