Mighty mountain

Adding a new glass box extension was only the beginning for this imaginative project which features a mountainous roofline, half-demolished brick walls in the kitchen and bright pops of colour throughout.

Every step of the way, CAN Architecture combined a practical reconfiguration of the existing layout – producing a new bedroom on the first floor – with sustainable improvements, thermally upgrading the entire house and including recycled materials (the kitchen and exterior lintel facings are made from old chopping boards and milk bottle tops).

Radical replacements

Previously split into two dwellings, this semi in a London conservation area has had its internal layout completely reorganised by Studio 30 Architects, with a large kitchen, dining and lounge extension added to replace a dated conservatory at the rear (left).
