A New Classic

Janice and Alan’s beautiful period home has evolved with the family over the years.

This former Master’s home is an effortless fusion of old and new. Built in the 1890s it was the property’s character that first attracted the couple when they viewed it 16 years ago.

“I was a head teacher so we’ve always joked that I ended up living in the Master’s house,” laughed Janice. “When we first saw the property we loved that the location felt quite rural but was still very accessible and near to schools and the town. It also overlooks the Scottish coastline and has a great ambience.”

On moving in Janice and Alan then had to strip the house back to basics and start over. While in many ways they were modernising the house they were keen to maintain the original charm of the home.

In addition to adding an extension to the kitchen and dining area, Janice added other features including, stripping back the staircase to its original wood, making a feature in the kitchen by using a beam from the Belfast ship yard and adding a stained glass window to match the original kitchen stained glass door. All the downstairs doors were handmade and pitch pine shutters were added to the Georgian style windows to create warmth and character.
