Remodelling a kitchen involves many design considerations, and one of the main elements is the choice in countertop. Simply put – it’s where all the action takes place. From unpacking your groceries to meal prep, it all happens on the countertop, and this is why choosing a surface that meets your needs and design is imperative.

With an array of materials available, we share the latest trends, innovations and colours.

THE SUSTAINABLE CHOICE

Not so much a trend but a necessity, sustainable solutions are driving the way forward. Linda Classen of Cosentino South Africa says: “We have found that home owners are interested in more sustainable and sustainably manufactured products, especially for worktops, as it is a large part of the kitchen cost.”

On this movement, Ramielle de Jager of Wolkberg Casting Studios notes: “There’s a definite uptake towards alternative materials like our Limesite and Terrazzo. We knew this was coming so we’ve dedicated years of research and development into Limesite for this purpose.

“It performs on par with other traditional countertop surfaces, it is locally produced and has the option of being an 81% recycled material and 100% local. We believe there is still lots of development that needs to go into Terrazzo to make it a suitable material for surfaces and hopefully that will come with time.
