Part of the charm of this Cape Town garden is that it’s constantly evolving.
A visit to Carel and June Steenekamp’s Constantia Hills garden is always a treat, especially as you never know what you’ll find in flower or what’s been added, or moved. “It’s not a show garden,” explains Carel, the gardener in the family, “it’s an experiment in progress and constantly changing.”
When the Steenekamps moved to their newly renovated house in 2011, Carel’s gardening experience had been limited to mowing the lawn. His objective in their new garden was to have as many different eco-systems as possible to establish a viable environment. Needing guidance, he approached horticulturalist Alan Dawson, who recommended using indigenous plants wherever suitable.
