An Introvert's Guide To Navigating Holiday Parties

Come December and we’re thrown right into the party season, with festivities and celebrations galore. While most people eagerly await this merry month, us introverts cringe at the thought of having to get out of the comfort of our homes and face throngs of unknown faces. It’s not that we hate hanging out with friends and having the time of our lives. It’s just that our shy personalities and introverted natures tend to clash with vibrant, cheerful folk, who may find our company rather boring or annoying. So, how does an introvert safely steer through the many events heading her way? Here’s your handbook for those ‘What do I do?’ moments.

“SHOULD I ARRIVE AT THE PARTY EARLY, OR BE AS LATE AS POSSIBLE?”

This is a very common dilemma, and the obvious answer would be to arrive late to minimize awkward/ painful interactions. However, it’s important to check who is hosting the party, or who gave you the invitation. It would be rude if you turn up for your bestie’s bash or your sister’s dinner dance several hours late. Imagine if someone close to you did the same! What you can do, however, is go to the location before the crowds descend, make the rounds, help out and then depart slightly earlier than the majority. That way, you’ve done your duty by your invitee/ host and escaped at a decent time. Cheers!

“CAN I GO EMPTY-HANDED IF I’M ONLY GOING TO STAY FOR A FEW MINUTES?”
