Master's Or None?
Cosmopolitan Sri Lanka|April 2018

As every new kid on the block seems to have a bachelor’s degree nowadays, making sure you stand out amidst the crowds of degree-holders is key to your career succession. Does that mean getting a master’s degree or more experience? LAKSHIKA PINTO weighs the pros and cons of being a jack of all trades as opposed to a master of one!

Master's Or None?
Leaving aside all the technical jargon and course-related specifics, there’s a bunch of other questions you need to ask yourself before committing to an expensive couple of years behind a library shelf as opposed to an office desk. Postgraduate studies may be shorter in duration, but they are much more intense in terms of the overall cost, the workload involved, and the impact they make on your personal and professional lives. In order to give you some guiding light and get you asking yourself the right questions, we’ve put together some of our biggest concerns when it comes to going for that master’s degree.

GO FUND YOURSELF

First and foremost, the biggest obstacle for most us independent women in terms of getting that master’s degree is the amount of dough it’s going to cost. In fact, just the thought of even putting together all the potential costs and expenses can be quite daunting. If you’re thinking of going overseas, you’re looking at so many extras like living expenses, accommodation, travel, visa and much more in addition to the actual bill you’ll be paying the university itself. A plus side to staying home in Lanka for your master’s is the massive amount of money you’ll save. That being said, if you’ve been too afraid to head off to a foreign land for your bachelor’s, your master’s could be the ideal time to take that year or two away from home.
