Most people, as is the trend now, prefer to visit tourist destinations outside India for enjoying the sight of snow-peaked mountains, majestic waterfalls or lush green landscapes. continents like the US, Europe, Australia or Southeast Asia are among some of the favourite holiday packages. However, there are equally fascinating places here in India. Jaisalmer, for example, reflects true natural beauty. A former medieval trading centre and a princely state in the western state of Rajasthan, in the heart of the Thar Desert, it is rightly known as the ‘Golden city’, distinguished by its yellow sandstone architecture which gives it a golden-yellow hue when the rising sun’s rays cover it.
The city has a rich historical background and is strategically important, being nearest to the Pakistan border. Jaisalmer is named after Rawal Jaisal, a Bhati ruler who founded the city in 1156 AD. The word means the ‘hill fort of Jaisal’. Being in the desert area, the day temperature during the peak of summer can go up to 49 degrees celsius and dip down to about 25 degrees celsius in the night. During winters, the maximum day temperature is around 23 degrees celsius whereas it can get very cold at about 5 degrees celsius in the night. We visited Jaisalmer in July 2015 at a time when it was the monsoon season across the rest of India.
