The idea is not to get consumed by success or failure, which is a very human instinct. The notion that success can come without setbacks is fooling your own self. As we age, the percentage of anxiety-driven thoughts increases since a lifetime of anxieties produces unpleasant memories which somehow overshadow the happy ones. That could explain the fear-driven hallucinations of our thoughts. It has also been observed that once anxiety-driven thoughts kick in, more and more negative and angry thoughts start emerging from the brain. This also may lead to depression.
In an age when adages and sayings flow fast on all sides, I rely on the following maxims which my mother used to say often and that has had an impact on my life: “Everything will come to pass.” I realise that every problem, difficulty or grief ultimately passes away, whether or not you do anything about it. Every trouble has a shelf-life. This mantra has been of great comfort over the years. Do not take everything personally. We are often unable to understand why others choose to hurt us. Their decision may have been taken for reasons unknown to us. This makes forgiving and moving forward easier. It helps to save a lot of heartburn if you realize this earlier on and internalize it.
