Fashion must be tied and grounded to the realities of life. Because what is fashion if not a reflection of what’s happening in the world at the moment, albeit done through a six-month-long prediction of the future? But at the same time, it offers escapism— that not everything is all doom and gloom.
Fashion designers have been visibly pushing for positive attributes to come through in their designs in the past two years. The spring/summer 2022 collections prove to be the culmination of all that effort in empowering us to regain some zest for life once again.
If the previous season saw designers largely creating to cater to a more home centric society, spring/summer 2022 considers our lifestyle changes and incorporates them into more outdoor specific styles. And we’re not talking about fashion meant to be taken on a ski expedition or to a faraway isle. They’re visualised through the simplest acts of going to the beach à la Prada or hitting the clubs and dancing the night away in Loewe and Dries Van Noten—activities that we were robbed of for a good portion of the past couple of years.
Are we back to pre-pandemic levels of relatively carefree indulgences? Fashion designers seem to think so. And you know what they say: speak (or in this case, wear) things into existence.
