When raising kids, the lessons learnt are a two-way street, writes GH columnist Susan Hayden.

Lessons In Love

Yesterday our teenage daughter had her heart broken for the first time. The romance that had blossomed on the bleached white dunes and in the turquoise waves of a beautiful seaside resort over the December holidays was unable to withstand the realities of real life − geographical distance coupled with the demands of each of their hectic schedules. For a while they soldiered on and tried to keep it going, but the impetus grew slower and slower and in the end he called it. It’s a long time since I’ve seen her that upset. She really liked him. There was a lot to like. There were also a lot of issues their burgeoning love brought up.
