Northern Ireland’s charms are complex, but memorable enough to power immortal moments of pop culture

What would life be if you could walk the length and breadth of your city in a couple of hours? If it was fortified with a wall that you could walk and run on, lead parades on, attend church and choirs on, and even binge shop on? If the city in question also went through a political upheaval that put it on the map for its brutality? The answers are actually captured wonderfully in one of my favourite television shows, a recent relatively obscure one called Derry Girls and the city in question is Londonderry, the second-largest city in Northern Ireland, the epicentre for the civil rights movement in the country. Also one of my favourite spots on my whirlwind tour of the country, and one of the few European cities in the world to have never been breached.
