Imagine whipping out a palm-sized case that is stylish yet intriguing. Casually playing with it, you slide it open, revealing a single circular capsule, before shutting it again. “Clic-Clac” goes the contraption, while a hypnotic fragrance pervades the air and draws curious glances from others. This mysterious object is none other than a sophisticated accessory for housing solid perfume – an invention by French haute perfumerie Henry Jacques.
The innovation completes the trilogy of the forms of its 50 Les Classiques scents: Les Essences (concentrated perfumes), Les Brumes (mists) and Solids (balms). Named Clic-Clac for the sound it makes, it would forever change the concept of fragrance.
Solid perfume has existed since antiquity, but beyond reviving this lost tradition, the maison of Henry Jacques has elevated it into a lifestyle statement. At its sumptuous boutique located in Marina Bay Sands Hotel Tower 2, I’m given the honour of being the first in Singapore to preview the prototype before interviewing its CEO Anne-Lise Cremona, who is the daughter of the eponymous brand’s founder.
Measuring 80mm by 48mm, the brushed titanium accessory fits pockets and purses nicely. At 128g, the weight hints at the precious nature of the material and quality of the construction, but it isn’t too heavy. The product is also offered in carbon fibre with titanium (120g), and rose gold (235g).
