The chronograph takes a significant place in Patek Philippe’s comprehensive catalogue of complicated watches. Since 2005, the manufacture has developed, designed and crafted in its workshops a complete range of chronograph movements with or without additional functions.
The first was the world’s thinnest split-seconds chronograph movement, calibre CHR 27-525 PS. This was followed by the second in-house movement in 2006 – calibre CH 28-520, featuring automatic winding, a modern vertical disk-type clutch system, flyback function, large single counter at 6 o’clock and a chronograph seconds hand that can be used as a permanent (running) seconds hand. This movement has been combined with additional complications, as seen in two of the manufacture’s recent models: the Ref. 5905/1A with an annual calendar and Ref. 5930P, which incorporates World Time as well.
In 2009, the maison created its third exclusive chronograph, the calibre CH 29-535 PS, which combined traditional architecture (manual winding, column wheel, toothed-wheel horizontal clutch system) with six patented innovations. Currently, this movement powers the men’s model Ref. 5172 and ladies’ model Ref. 7150/250.
Two years later, this base calibre was interpreted in a Grand Complications version that incorporated a perpetual calendar (CH 29-535 PS Q), housed in both the Ref. 5270 and 5271 models. Since 2012, it also drives the Ref. 5204 in a split-seconds chronograph and perpetual calendar edition (CHR 29-535 PS Q). While Patek Philippe’s various chronograph movements in the current collection are offered in over 20 variations, these three new contemporary additions presented last October promise to pique any watch collector’s interest.
