Taking the modular route to perfect a smartphone
Modular phones as a concept are not new. Google’s Project Ara had to meet its unfortunate demise but it was Motorola (shall we say, Lenovo?) that kept the modular dream alive with the Moto Z series. This year, they have updated Moto Z with the Moto Z2 series and the decision to launch the Moto Z2 Play before the Moto Z2 in India makes sense as Moto Z Play did fairly well compare to its flagship last year.
Design and Build Quality
On the face of it, the Moto Z2 Play looks similar to last year’s Moto Z but Lenovo has managed to make the successor more powerful, thinner, lighter and uses new design material. The device feels sturdy and has a clean design. The phone is quite attractive but the protruding camera can be an eyesore. One thing we have liked about Moto phones is how clean the user interface is and the Moto Z2 Play is no different. The back panel has contacts for Moto Mods.
Key Features
The Moto Z2 Play’s Android 7.1.1 is clearly as good as stock Android, but comes with Moto Experiences that do not really hinder the user experience. This also ensures that Lenovo can roll out updates for the device faster compared to the competition.
