The male grooming and skincare industry is booming, but is everyman buying into it?
The scene in the film “American Psycho” has been oft-referenced and even parodied by actress Margot Robbie in a video for Vogue magazine. In it, the protagonist of this horror-comedy, Patrick Bateman, narrates his comically extensive grooming routine down to the last detail — from an ice pack to depuff the eyes, to an exfoliating gel scrub, to a leave-on mask that he peels off ten minutes later. Bateman is even able to offer sage beauty advice to the viewer. “I always use an aftershave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out, and makes you look older.” But while in the film, Bateman’s narcissism and extreme vanity are symbolic of his latent, psychological dysfunction, his grooming routine may have actually been quite prescient.
