When listening to the changes to your body and trusting your gut can save your life.

Ovarian Cancer and You

There are around 800 new ovarian cancer cases in a year nationwide, according to the 2007 National Cancer Registry. Part of the reason why it’s so hard to diagnose and treat is because ovarian cancer symptoms can often be missed. In fact, many ovarian cancer symptoms seem harmless and is not associated with pain or abnormal bleeding.

Says Professor Woo Yin Ling, a gynaecological oncologist, “In general, ovarian cancer can affect women of all ages who are not known to have any risk factors. However, some risk factors include increasing age, obesity, and having a relative with ovarian cancer.” In some cases women develop ovarian cancer because they carry genetic mutations. The more well-known ones are the BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations, such as in the case of actress Angelina Jolie, shares Professor Woo. While the scientific community has found some associative risk factors, patients who develop ovarian cancer do not fall into any of these risk categories.
