For much of the year, savvy San Franciscans never leave home without their trusty layers of jackets and sweaters, peeling them off—and back on again for evening—as the sun and fog play tag across the City by the Bay.
However, September brings frequent sunny stretches of delightfully comfortable days and fogless nights. Those in the know head for these outdoor patios for food and drinks al fresco.
1 FOREIGN CINEMA
Do dinner and a movie simultaneously. Fairy lights are strung across the spacious outdoor courtyard where meals are accompanied by a film. “Mr. Moto in Danger Island” is September’s feature through 9/16; then “Raising Arizona” through the month’s end.

2 ARGUELLO
Adjacent to the historic Officers’ Club in the leafy Presidio, Arguello’s Mexican menu—and eight varieties of margaritas—are a salute to this former military outpost. Start with chips, salsa and guacamole on the patio where fire pits are lit if a chill creeps into the park.

3 JONES
In a landmark building four blocks from Union Square, a horticultural hideaway attracts hummingbirds and hungry visitors alike. Depending on the daily opening hours, Patio Bar at Jones serves Sunday brunch, lunch, dinner and/or drinks. Happy hours, too.
