With the arrival of spring and the return of sunny days, this is the perfect time to plan long weekend walks with the kids (including those of the furry variety). Pack a picnic, dust off the leashes and put on your walking shoes – it’s time to get those tails wagging!
Newlands Forest
If you fancy a peaceful walk surrounded by lush greenery under a canopy of shady trees, Newlands Forest in Cape Town is the ultimate get-back-to-nature experience for you and your canine companions. Take a leisurely stroll through the stunning surrounds, stopping now and again to examine the interesting plants and wildlife along the way. There’s no better way to unwind than getting the family together and soaking up the beauty all around you as you explore the eastern slopes of Table Mountain together.
There are a variety of trails to choose from, ranging from easy to moderate, many of which will lead you to peaceful streams and dazzling views of the surrounding suburbs. There’s plenty of signage dotted throughout the forest, so you’ll easily find routes suitable for your family and pooches to traverse. Dogs aren’t permitted in certain areas, like the designated picnicking and braaiing spots, so keep an eye out to ensure you’re in a pup-friendly zone. You’ll also need an activity permit, which costs R288.
