Breaking down the Bobby McCain move
Dolphin Digest|June 2021
Former fifth-round pick Bobby McCain did a commendable job for Miami in 2020, as the former cornerback had transitioned to safety over the last two seasons. McCain’s play may never have been described as “elite,” but his leadership ability was.

Breaking down the Bobby McCain move

The safety position has been under the microscope for the Miami Dolphins this offseason.

The only issue was that McCain carried a high price tag for what he brought to the field, but some felt Miami would pay him the $6.4 million he was owed because of his impact as a leader.

However, Miami had different plans, and the Dolphins team captain was released. The decision to release McCain saved the Dolphins $5.6 million on the 2021 salary cap. That may not seem like an enormous amount, but Miami needed to clear some money to sign its 2021 NFL draft picks. McCain’s cap number was a significant aspect of his release, but other factors played a role.

Miami drafted former Oregon safety Jevon Holland with the No. 36 overall pick in the 2021 draft. Head coach Brian Flores raved about Holland after he drafted him, so it started to feel like that was the beginning of the end for McCain.

Then there was the news that Miami brought in former Indianapolis Colts safety Malik Hooker for a visit. It seemed that it was only a matter of time until McCain was handed his walking papers, which came a few days later. While Dolphins fans appreciated what McCain brought to Miami, the NFL also is a business, so the Dolphins had to do what they did.
