Williams gets one free pass.
Doug Williams figured out the duties of his new job as the Washington Redskins senior vice president of personnel pretty early.
Whatever happens this season, it won’t be his fault. “This roster is still the best roster I’ve seen since I’ve been here,” Williams told reporters at training camp. “There are some people who were here last year who aren’t here, but we helped ourselves in a lot of different areas.”
Jay Gruden, the ball is in your court. Williams, secure in his role as Redskins icon, the Super Bowl XXII winning quarterback, essentially told everyone that the personnel department has done its job, and done it well – perhaps better than since he arrived here in 2014.
Considering this team has had two consecutive winning seasons and one NFC East title in the last two years with lesser talent, Williams’ declaration should make Redskins fans feel good going into the 2017 season.
Of course, some of those fans, having little skin left that hasn’t been burned by past promises of talented rosters, might not be willing to believe Williams.
Seems blasphemous, doesn’t it? Not believe Williams? Unthinkable.
