Jon Gruden wasted no time in assembling his coaching staff.
On the day of the press conference announcing his return to the Raiders, Gruden revealed he had hired Greg Olson as offensive coordinator, Paul Guenther as defensive coordinator and Rich Bisaccia as special teams coordinator.
It’s Olson’s second go-round with the silver and black. He was the team’s offensive play-caller in 2013-14. He orchestrated an offense that was 23rd overall in 2013 while using three quarterbacks – Terrelle Pryor, Matt Flynn and Matt McGloin. Olson was also at the helm of the offense during Derek Carr’s first NFL season when the quarterback broke just about every Raiders rookie passing record.
Most recently Olson was the quarterbacks coach with the Los Angeles Rams where he helped Jared Goff’s rapid development.
“He coached with me in Tampa and he coached with Sean McVay, one of my ex-assistants, in L.A.,” Gruden said. “The system of football that we run will be a real natural flow.”
Guenther has been one of the most respected defensive coordinators in the NFL since taking over from Mike Zimmer with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2014.
The Bengals had the 18th-ranked defense this season and were eighth against the pass. They struggled against the run but had 41 sacks – 17 more than the Raiders had.

NEWS & NOTES
The Raiders had one of the easier schedules in 2020 and got only eight wins to show for it. Things won’t get any easier in 2021, either.
Looking back at 2020 season
The 2020 season will absolutely be remembered for being one of the strangest and most disappointing in franchise history.
Gruden feeling the heat?
“I know there is a big bull’s-eye on my chest, certainly. If the people want to use that as an incentive, then so be it. I worked for Al Davis in 1998. That was pressure. I was 34 years old. I’ve dealt with pressure before. I don’t really feel pressure. I love the excitement and thrill of competing, and I can’t worry about things I can’t control in that regard. I know people will want to step on me and beat me, and that is just the way this league is.”
