The Umngot river in Meghalaya is considered one of the cleanest rivers in India. The Meghalaya government's decision to construct a 210 MW dam upstream in the adjoining West Jaintia Hills on the Umngot river is being met with strong resistance from locals of at least 12 villages around the Bangladesh border. The protestors have alleged that the state government has decided to go ahead with the dam construction, ignoring their demands and the possible threats that it can bring down to the ecosystem.
The state government, justifying its decision to go ahead with the dam, has said that the project might make the state self-sufficient when it comes to the power supply. However, the locals are of the firm belief that this project, if executed, will lead to a loss of livelihood for several people who depend on tourism.
It may be mentioned here that the Umngot river attracts many tourists for its enchanting beauty with crystal clear water, so clean that the boats appear to float on the surface, and one can see the bottom of the river and the fish inside.
