Aanchal Thakur of Burua in Himachal Pradesh has become the first Indian to win a medal in an international skiing event. The 21-year-old won the slalom bronze at the Alpine Ejder 3200 Cup, held at Erzurum in Turkey from January 6 to 9.
Her success took years of training and participation in several international competitions. Also, just before the big day, Aanchal cut her right hand while sharpening one of her skis. She bled profusely, and almost lost consciousness. But, she refused to let anything get in her way. Encouraged by her family, most of whom are skiers themselves, she did India proud. Excerpts from an interview:
What do you do for being mentally tough?
Mental toughness is all about motivating oneself. My mother and father help me with that. Mother keeps telling me: If not you, who else? Often, I have heard my father say, “India ke liye yahan tak pahunchna bahut badi baat hai [It’s a big deal for India to reach up to here (in skiing)].”
