Strategic Outlook Needed
It was past midnight on September 28, 2016, when confirmation came that the first of the multiple trans-border attacks planned on terrorist camps had been successfully launched. A small group of us at the Udhampur operations room was, at that time, monitoring what later became known as the ‘surgical strikes’.
Now that the surprise had been lost, the question uppermost in our minds was the manner in which the Pakistan army, would respond to the subsequent set of attacks. The last strike was planned only around first light, which was still a few hours away. More time spent in enemy territory meant increased risk of detection.
The commanding officer of the Special Forces (SF) unit was asked whether he would like to advance the timing of his last strike. Although his team was already in position, his answer was emphatic: “We are confident of executing our plans, no change in the timing is necessary.”
This small incident exemplifies the spirit of the SF. They have supreme confidence in their ability to handle any situation they may face. And, this confidence comes not from bravado, but painstaking preparation.
