Lessons from a curious art exhibition
At first, they looked like garish masks carved in brass and steel. One could also mistake them for blown-up stickpins in antique gold. In fact, I was certain they resembled relics of Buddhist art, perhaps a comment on the preservation of Tibetan identity in exile.
Little did I anticipate that Shweta Bhattad’s installation at Khoj’s fundraiser exhibition on its 20th anniversary was alluding to pigs which attack women in rural areas, when they venture out in the dark to answer the call of nature. I should have done my homework. I should have known that Bhattad hails from the village of Paradsinga in Maharashtra; land issues and the plight of farmers have been a recurring theme in her art.
