Wilks operates at the sharp end of the ongoing battle to give youth a chance instead of buying in foreign experience – a fight his Tigers side have been struggling to win in recent years.
However, he believes the oft-peddled notion that scrapping the relegation dogfight would mean more opportunities is wide of the mark and that financial incentives are a better way forward. At present, Premiership clubs have access to £600,000-worth of academy credits on top of the £7m salary cap, but Wilks believes that figure needs reviewing to force a quantum leap.
He told The Rugby Paper: “Personally, I think the Premiership is a fantastic competition model and part of that is because there is the threat of relegation. It adds spice to our game and I’m not sure that a solution for player development is to ring-fence the league.
