Ecuador President Guillermo Lasso imposed a state of emergency on the prison system, after deadly clashes among gang members in a coastal prison killed at least 116 people.

Officials said at least five of the dead were found to have been beheaded in the violence at Litoral penitentiary in Guayaquil on Tuesday. Authorities called it the worst prison bloodbath ever in the country.

Speaking at a news conference, Lasso called the bloodshed bad and sad.

Another 80 inmates were injured during the Tuesday night clashes at the Litoral penitentiary.
