Kerala to increase RT-PCR tests amid virus spread

Kerala, which is struggling with rising COVID-19 infections and deaths, is planning to increase RT-PCR tests following criticism against its focus on less accurate antigen assays.
TRIVANDRUM: Veena George, the state’s health minister, said all symptomatic people would now be subjected to RT-PCR, which is considered the gold standard in virus testing.
The federal authorities had last week asked the state to adopt the reliable testing method as the infections continued unchecked for over three months now. They say the state has been witnessing a sustained and significant transmission of COVID-19 since July and it remains the top contributor to India’s daily caseload.
Despite efforts to increase testing, confirmation percentage remains very high, more than 15 per cent, signalling high and widespread transmission.
