Thousands of sun-worshippers flocked to beaches in Brighton and Bournemouth on the South Coast and Lytham St Annes in Lancashire, while others packed into beer gardens across the country.
Roads including the M1 in Bedfordshire were busy and journeys slow to staycation hotspots such as Cornwall, Devon and Dorset, with an estimated 10.8 million trips planned over the weekend.
The RAC predicts drivers will make around two million journeys on tomorrow’s bank holiday alone.
It was also a busy weekend for thousands of Chelsea and Manchester City fans enjoying a trip to Porto for last night’s Champions League final.
