The 8-1 thumping by Bayern Munich on Friday night was one of the worst results in their proud 120-year history.

Giants of the game, featuring arguably the greatest player of all time, reduced to tatters.

Quique Setien barely made it out of the dressing room before he was told to sling his hook, just eight months since becoming boss.

The Spanish press, as expected, had the knives out and there was a sense of gleeful butchering as years of frustration were finally unleashed on a club that refused to accept change was needed long, long before now.

Years of exorbitant transfer fees on players that didn’t fit – Philippe Coutinho netting twice against his parent club was a particularly painful reminder – a failure to replace Xavi and Andres Iniesta, poor choices for manager and a lack of faith from boardroom to dressing room, led to that horror show in Lisbon.
