Last year, in N-Photo 85, we looked at juxtaposition and what a deep role it plays in photography, particularly in the street – getting impact by setting one thing against another in the frame and making connections that will, hopefully, surprise in one way or another. Well, related to this is a different combination of subjects that also works by surprise, when something challenges the expected order of things. In other words, when it’s out of place. This, as you might expect, is as much to do with viewers’ expectations as with the scene itself.
