I had travelled all the way from Pune near the Western Ghats to the Northeastern state of Sikkim in the hope of sighting some of the rare and endemic birds for which this erstwhile monarchy is so justifiably famous.
A couple of days after our group arrived, we got our first glimpse of the high-altitude mountain birds at Lachen in north Sikkim.
There was a downpour that morning (attributed by locals to the heavy snow in the higher reaches) and we wondered if that was why we were welcomed to a sight of a spectacular flock of between 450 and 500 birds. They were Grandalas Grandala coelicolor. We were left breathless… and not because we were at an altitude of 2,743 m. msl.
