Bennett ends Sagan's green jersey reign

The first Irishman to take the points accolade since the rule of King Kelly

On Sunday Deceuninck-Quick Step’s Sam Bennett marched into Paris in green, where he became the first Irish winner of one of the Tour’s jerseys since Sean Kelly took the fourth of his points titles in 1989. Perhaps more notably he became the first rider to end Peter Sagan’s stranglehold on the competition.

Ever since Sagan took his first win on his very first road stage at the Tour in 2012, the Slovak has dominated the points competition, winning it seven times in eight seasons, his run only broken in 2017 when he was disqualified in the opening week for putting Mark Cavendish into the barriers.
