The header photo on Mark McNally’s Twitter page is dramatic. The same photo as above, it shows one of those gutwrenching near-miss moments; McNally desperately reaching for the line despite the realisation he is being beaten.
The photo shows Peter Sagan (Tinkoff) winning stage three of September’s Eneco Tour, with McNally (left of centre) eventually fifth, the last of a five-man breakaway painfully caught in the final metres by a peloton hell-bent on a bunch sprint. A creditable performance for a rider in his first year at Pro-Continental level, and, if a picture depicting a glorious failure seems incongruous on Twitter, then perhaps McNally’s fatalistic humour explains its presence.
