A week is a long time in this round robin format of the Cricket World Cup – just ask the England dressing room, who appear uncharacteristically low in confidence and belief as they look to dust themselves down to face India on Sunday.
Since my last column, fresh from a comfortable victory over the West Indies, England have suffered back-to-back defeats as a result of below-par run chases, leaving captain Eoin Morgan in a position he never thought he’d find himself in with this group of players, picking chins up off the floor.
Thankfully, Eoin is the ideal man to have in the dressing room for this situation. He’s a good, calm head, an excellent motivator to other players around him and the perfect character to instil the confidence and belief that this side have become renowned for. Personally, I think England will recover from this blip and squeeze into the top four.
That said, Jason Roy is a huge loss to England at the top of the order and I believe the management will have to do everything in their power to get him back playing – even if he is not 100 per cent fit.
