QB evaluation…it's complicated

Dwayne Haskins was the Ohio State phenom many of us pegged as the next Giants quarterback. This was inside of two years ago, the draft approaching, amateur analysts and personnel experts flooding TV and social media with their rationale.

The Giants, of course, chose Daniel Jones with the sixth pick that day. Washington took Haskins nine picks later at 15, and a couple days after Christmas 2020, Washington gave up on Haskins following 13 starts. He was 3-10 overall with 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, a 60.1 completion percentage and 74.4 rating. But that’s not all. On Haskins’ way out the door, we learned of his questionable work ethic and attitude, leaving reasonable people to wonder where such critiques were leading to the 2019 draft, and how so many so-called experts could be so wrong about Dwayne Haskins.

There are no easy answers. Humans are an imperfect species, and that includes NFL players and coaches and, especially, personnel people. Haskins is 23 years old; who knows, maybe he takes a deep look inside and unearths the qualities that made him a first-round draft choice.

We don’t know if he will do that.
