ANDHRA PRADESH

TirupatiPraying to a prosperous deity

The Tirumala Hills spread across the Seshachalam range in Chittoor district. Seven peaks make up these hills and one is crowned by the temple dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara. According to legend, Lord Vishnu came down to Earth to save mankind from the evils of Kaliyug, and Tirupati was his abode. Even today, praying here is believed to offer protection from the ills of the world and attract prosperity. This is one of the world’s most-visited temples and devotees drop donations that run into crores of rupees. A fairly steep climb takes you to the main temple and this is a fulfilling and exhilarating part of worshipping at Tirupati.

There are long queues for darshan. You can reward yourself after the wait with one of the famous laddoos served as prasad here.

ARUNACHAL PRADESH

The culture and colour of tribes

There are 26 major tribes here, each with its own traditions and customs. The major tribes of Arunachal Pradesh are Adi, Galo, Aka, Apatani, Nyishi, Tagins, Bori and Bokar. Living in this far-flung part of the country, these tribes have maintained their close-to-nature way of life over centuries, worshipping natural forces and the elements. Some, such as the Monpa in West Kameng and Tawang district and the Singpho tribe in Lohit district are followers of Buddhism. With so many cultures, Arunachal Pradesh is a rich tapestry of tribal rites and rituals, most evident during its many festivals. Living off the land, the tribes observe many festivals that celebrate the harvest.

To get a close-up view of Arunachal’s gloriously colourful tribal festivals, head to Ziro—the hub of these celebrations.
