'The loveliest Castle in the world' .Centuries of England’s history, from life as the residence of six medieval Queens, and of King Henry VIII, to the 20th century injection of US wealth, have left their mark on this uniquely beautiful estate.
ONE OF ENGLAND’S MOST striking castles, Leeds Castle, owes its name not to the eponymous great industrial city in Yorkshire but to a distortion of the Old English ‘Esledes’, describing its idyllic location in the gentle slopes and valley of the Len, a little-known river in Kent, south-east England.
Millions of motorists, myself included, have, in speeding along the motorway between London and the Channel ports of Dover and Folkestone, ‘missed a trick’ in passing by this remarkable gem, without a pause. In royal ownership since medieval times, continuing through the Tudor period until 1552, Edward VI granted the property to a favoured courtier of his late father, Henry VIII. Since then the castle has seen many changes, many owners and many uses, from secure sanctuary to family home to a field hospital during WWII. Although the Victorian/ Edwardian years saw decades of deterioration and decline, despite huge investment, the acclaimed, early-20th century architectural historian, Lord Arthur Conway, compared it to many others and deemed it the ‘loveliest castle in the world’.
